- [SIEGE OF FORT SUMTER] A clumsy gun crew exercising with "blank" charges at Morris Island bounces a shot off the wharf at Fort Sumter, doing no harm but leaving a long white scar in the paving. Apologies ensue and everything is smoothed over. Investigators find that the gun had been left loaded with a live round at a previous drill. No one had thought to check if the bore was clear. The incident does not ease tensions./1861
