- At Hampton Roads, Virginia, Confederate batteries on the promontory of Stevens Point near Suffolk shell the Union blockade ships. While the Union Navy vessels return fire, little damage is done on either side. Meanwhile at Norfolk, the USS Monticello fires on Sewall’s Point, Virginia, opposite Fortress Monroe, Virginia. By 5:00 p.m. the Confederates under command of Captain Peyton H. Colquitt of the Columbus Light Guard from Georgia install three 32-pound guns at the Sewell's Point battery. Captain Colquitt flies a Georgia state flag at the battery since he does not have a Confederate flag. When the Monticello begins to shell the Sewall's Point Battery around 5:30 p.m., Colquitt returns fire, driving off the Monticello. /1861
