- At Wheeling, western Virginia, delegates are selected to the Second Wheeling Convention to secede from the commonwealth of Virginia./1861
- The Confederate shore battery at Pig Point, near Hampton Roads, Virginia, today fires on the US revenue cutter Harriet Lane commanded by Captain Faunce. The Harriet Lane, named for the niece of President James Buchanan, was part of the infamous Fox Expedition which precipitated P.G.T. Beauregard’s firing on Fort Sumter in April. The Harriet Lane had fired the first naval shot of the War outside Charleston Harbor, SC, when the US mail steamer Nashville appeared on the night of April 11th no colors flying./1861
