Lamon: Lincoln will evacuate Sumter

  • [SIEGE OF FORT SUMTER] Colonel Ward H. Lamon, personal friend of President Lincoln,  arrives from Washington at Fort Sumter, after having received permission from Governor Pickens to visit Major Anderson as a "confidential agent of the President" to make arrangements for the removal of the garrison. Lamon impresses on Major Anderson and the garrison that the command will soon be withdrawn. Lamon, meeting with Governor Pickens, tells him "that the President professed a desire to evacuate the work."/1861
