Jackson completes Martinsburg destruction
- At Martinsburg, western Virginia, Colonel Thomas J. Jackson, against his personal feelings but obeying Joseph Johnston’s orders, completes the destruction of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Shops, roundhouses, 42 locomotives and at least 305 rail cars valued at over $400,000./1861
- At Falls Church, Virginia, Professor Thaddeus Sobieski Constantine Lowe, whose academic connections are unclear, today demonstrates the reconnaissance value of his hot air balloon by ascending with an artist to observe the encamped Confederate units nearby while the artist sketches the scene, providing an aerial image of the Southern position./1861
