- In Western Virginia, US Major General George B. McClellan moves three brigades to Buckhannon and one to Philippi, in preparation for an attack on Robert S. Garnett’s Confederate forces in the direction of Laurel Hill and Rich Mountain, Virginia. While McClellan well outnumbers Garnett, he disbelieves his intelligence and decides to wait until he could receive reinforcements./1861
