- For several months, men known to be Southern sympathizers were invited to a “buffalo hunt” in West Texas, code language for an irregular military gathering to force the Union out of New Mexico. Eager to remove all vestiges of Federal presence from the New Mexico Territory, the Confederate War Department places Gen. Henry Hopkins Sibley in command of these irregular West Texas forces to do just that./1861
