Cold reception for Ohio Congressman

• Clement Laird Vallandigham, Ohio’s third district Democratic US Congressman, an ardent abolitionist, states’ rights constitutionalist, and pacifist, today speaks to the Ohio regiments serving in Northern Virginia, but the response is cold. At one stop he is shouted down and pelted with stones and rubbish. His activities will get the attention of the Lincoln Administration before long, and that will not bode well for him. He will become known as a Copperhead, a Southern sympathizer in the North, and his wing of the Democratic Party will become known as Peace Democrats. /1861
